Description:

The seemingly mundane tasks of maintaining a CV, running a meeting, preparing a job or awards application, or keeping up with professional social media are actually critical components of a faculty member’s professional presence: the way they are seen and considered by their colleagues, leaders, and potential sponsors. Done well, they enhance the faculty member’s reputation and build their professional network, opening the door to opportunities and connections.

In this workshop we will focus on the basics of how faculty members show up in person and on paper in their professional lives, discussing the concept of a ‘career infrastructure’ defined as the resources, foundation, and basic framework an individual creates to support and advance their life’s work.

Presenters:

  • Harriet Hopf, MD, Professor and Executive Director of Faculty Development and Academic Affairs, Department of Anesthesiology; Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering; and Co-Director, School of Medicine Coaching and Advancement Network, University of Utah.
  • Susan Pollart, MD, MS, FAAFP, Ruth E. Murdaugh Professor of Family Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, University of Virginia School of Medicine

Learning Objectives:

  • Leverage the curriculum vitae to showcase professional strengths
  • Identify where strengths have led to positive outcomes in professional situations
  • Using STARs (Situation/Target or Task/Action/Result), create a short statement describing a professional achievement, highlighting one or more strengths.
  • Experiment with different ways of presenting professional achievements, based on a STAR.
